Oral/Idea of Progress
Message de alizeze posté le 20-05-2016 à 23:51:23 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,

I'm going to talk about the notion of the idea of progress. First of all, a progress can be a technical, scientific or social development contributing to make a better world. But, the idea of progress is not necessarily a positive change, it can be a dangerous progress having limits. Documents chosen are about the social and the scientific progress. What are the different progress in our society? Firstly, I will represent gene manipulations by the subject of human cloning and it ethical limits. Then, I will show the progress of a point of view social with the American dream and the impact on the goal of immigration.

Firstly, the document “Odd man out” is a cartoon of a factory conveyor belt where newly-produced men, appearing one by one in exact duplicates: tall, well-built, dark haired, square-jawed. The odd man out is about half their size: pale and thin, large feet and hands, he is disproportionate. He is lifted by his scalp with metal tongs to be dropped into the skip, “CLONES R US / REJECTS” in the foreground, with other defective clones. They he probably has been judged not good enough because he doesn’t correspond exactly to the physical ideals of the prototype. We can only see three eyes and grey hair on a clones’ face. In this human factory, they seek to produce only “perfect” men, who haven't differences because there is only one ideal: is the standardisation.
Each of the “perfect” men is dehumanizing because in reality to have two same people is impossible, from the outside: our minds and our personalities can’t be seen. Who deciding and according to what standards? The gene manipulation modify genes to change the future person's health, principally. Screening for serious diseases is one thing, but choosing of the physique is superficial. The cartoon pushes the concept to the extreme, where everyone is identical and those who don’t fit the arbitrary mould are killed.
Here, is the representation of the scientific progress. Henceforth, we succeed to change the DNA to cure illness: is a formidable positive progress. But, design his baby is an against-progress with ethical limits. In fact, a baby isn't an object, choose his destiny is against humans freedom.

Secondly, the street interview “How do you define the American Dream” shows that a common definition of the American Dream can be defined today: to have a roof over you head and food on the table, have the chance to get what you want.
Thus, the definition of the American Dream has changed over time by the evolution of society and the economic crisis. For long, the American Dream has meant freedom, success, including the opportunity for prosperity, upward social mobility for anyone who work hard enough. Immigrants from all over the world flocked to America beginning in the 1800s, all searching for land, new opportunities, and a fresh start. People used to come to America for protection from persecution, oppression, or poverty.
Like this, the American Dream illustrate the social and economical progress of the society, and principally the American society. Today’s the definition of the American dream is much different. Rather than looking for great wealth or success, people hope to avoid poverty or loneliness. At last, the American Dream is an ideal vision of the USA, before or now, because there is a contrast between minorities and Americans coming from immigration of Europe.

To conclude, the scientific progress, in gene manipulation, is an advance but, to the extreme, there is ethical limits: It isn't normal to create a society based on criteria chosen. In other hand, the social progress, supported by economic and political system, can be illustrate by the American Dream. But, this vision do not allusion to immigrants were excluded from the system.
