Bonjour,
Reading "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes", I found several times the expression "The house was built (standing) in its own grounds".
I did not find the meaning of this expression. I suppose it could be translated in French by : "C'était une maison de plain-pied" (i.e. without a storey), but I have so far found no confirmation.
Could anyone help ? Thanks.

Hello,
It usually means that the house has gardens and perhaps other outside amenities. It doesn't refer to the number of storeys.
