How evolved the U.S immigration?
USA has always been considered as a Nation of Immigrants. That’s why, we could see lot of immigration’s wave.
The first immigration was when the first settlers from London were landed in Virginia in 1607 in order to set up a commercial enterprise. Some English Puritans fled in America because of religious persecutions. Some others crossed the border to experiment democracy or to start a new life.
The second immigration was the major wave of immigration. Actually, America needed people to build the Land and there was Potato Famine (1848), the industrial Revolution which caused unemployment in Europe. They wanted to find a job and America represented freedom and Land of marvels and opportunity: the “American Dream”. European thought that if they were going in America, they will not live in poverty.
The third immigration was after the World War I. European wanted to live Europe because they thought that America was a land of opportunity. Besides, there were not wars there. The immigration was too important that’s why America’s government created Ellis Island which was the first place to control immigration. Ellis Island was on front of New-York and mostly who came there was European. When immigrants arrived, they had to do a medical examination (give examples) and answered 29 questions because when they were healthy, they had to come back in them native country. They could stay 3 to 5 hours if everything was ok and several months if it was necessary. In general, the conditions of waiting were rough. They had to sit on benches in big hall without ventilation so diseases were spreading. Ellis Island was closed in 1954 and became a Museum.
Today, the immigration is illegal. Actually, American don’t permit immigrant to cross the border because they have enough people. For example, on cross of Mexico, there are some Americans who shot with rifle, Mexicans who try to cross the border. When an immigrant have not his paper and catch by the police, he must go back in his native country.
To conclude, Immigration has evolved. The borders were not closed when the America needed people to have a population but now, immigration is supervised by government because it is illegal.
