Hello,
"be going to" is used to express an action which happens or takes place in the future and "be about to" for a very near future.
Hope it helps.

Hello ,
1 ]- to be going to : expresses something you have the intention of doing in a near future ; or something visible , obvious to see or guess :
a ) I am fed up with my old car ; I am going to change it for a brand new one.
b ) Look at this heavy grey sky : it is going to rain , for sure.
c ) This lady is going to have her babytwins this month which explains how heavy she looks ( and is ) and exhausted she is.
2 ]- to be about : also expresses a near future , but it refers to changes , events or the status of a person which is officially stated , such as a future marriage published at the Town Hall three weeks before the vows and celebration.
This fantastic couple is about to marry , aren't they?
