Linking verb/help
Message from tatu posted on 25-06-2012 at 17:44:49 (D | E | F)
Hello,

Today, I learnt about " Linking verbs" at school. And I would like to ask you about " appear" and " seem". My teacher said that their meaning is the same.
If that is right, what case will it be used for?
Thank you in advance!

Hello to those involved in this discussion:

Tatu – I believe your teacher is correct.
Appear/seem. An English-language thesaurus would suggest that they are more or less synonymous, within reason.
In my Collins Thesaurus, the entry for "appear" offers "look (like or as if), occur, seem, strike one as . . .": and the entry for "seem" offers "appear, assume, give the impression . . . "
As a native English-speaker, a university-educated, albeit retired, languages teacher, I would, could and do use "appear" and "seem" interchangeably. Perhaps this is not the case in other, English-speaking communities.

Hello,
I would use "to appear" and "to seem" in the same meaning of the " to look" if they were followed by adjective.
He looked (appeared,seemed)sad,tired...and so on.
