Pronunciation ch/ th
Message from clairefr posted on 16-12-2011 at 13:13:09 (D | E | F)
Hello,

I never know how to pronounce ch in words like architect. Is it the sound like chicken, or k like chemist or like chef ?
Is there any rule or do I need to check in a dictionary for each word ?

I have another question about pronunciation : is th always pronounced like or ,or is it sometimes pronounced like t as in French ?
For example, in English, should I say Pythagore with the sound or with the t sound?

I would be pleased if someone could help me to solve my pronunciation problems.
Thanks a lot !

Hello claire,

I used to tell my students that they had to learn 3 things about each new word:
meaning
pronunciation
spelling

Here are 3 quite good dictionaries
architect ...Link

Pythagoras ...Link

French ...Link

You ask:
I have another question about pronunciation : is th always pronounced like or or is it sometimes pronounced like t as in French ?
I am sorry but I can't see any 'th' in the word 'French' that ends with .
In some words th is pronounced like a t but there are few of them.
I am afraid you have to check the words in a dictionary;but isn't it interesting? because you may learn synonyms and different meanings and uses.

Thank you Lucile for your answer and your useful link.
I was looking for a pronunciation dictionary with proper names, your link suits perfectly !

I meant th pronounced t like in French language, not like in the word 'French'. For example : mathematics / mathématiques, thesis / thèse, etc.

Hello Clairefr

Th is rarely pronounced T.
The only exceptions I am aware of are Thomas, Esther, Thames [temz]and thyme!

All the best!
