I suspect that you mean:
My grandfathers lived to a great age.

That exact example is used in the link above. It's just another way of expressing "large in size, amount or number".
And idiomatic expression that means the same thing:
She lived to the ripe old age of 91.

Hello,
Great means well above the average in size, quantity , remarkable ability, important thing, high rang or degree: Great Britain, Great to see you, the Great War (1914-1918)the America great lakes, the Great Powers of Europe and so forth...
