Bonjour.

Voici le second volet de cette histoire.

Niveau :

Correction : mercredi 21 novembre 2007

Au contraire, Miss Brittle pensait qu'elle devait être d'autant plus tolérante. Avec les années, Wilson était devenu plus intransigeant, alors que Miss Brittle comprenait de mieux en mieux la décision d'Arthur. Wilson avait même dit qu'il ne voulait plus entendre parler de son cadet, l'accusant de la mort de leur vieille mère, décédée à peine sept jours après le départ d'Arthur.
Comme très certainement leur défunte mère l'aurait fait en d'autres occasions, Miss Brittle essaya de convaincre Wilson que ce départ n'avait aucunement abrégé la vie de Mrs Loveheart. Un jour, Wilson excédé avait même osé dire à sa soeur aînée : « Arrête de parler ainsi, on dirait notre pauvre mère !»
Il trouvait par ailleurs que son jeune frère n'avait pas assez profité de la vie et qu'il aurait été bien plus heureux s'il avait épousé leur cousine Emma.

as at in the mean time Miss Brittle was understanding better and better Arthur 's decision .Wilson had even said that he didn't ever want to hear about his cadet , blaming him about the death of their old mother , dying just seven days after Arthur 's departure . As their departed mother would have probably done in other occasions , Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson that this departure had never shortened the life of Mrs Loveheart . One day , wilson restived had even dared to say to his elder sister
( Stop talking this way , we could tell it's our mother " talking " )
In the mean time , he did find that his young brother had not made the most of his life and that he would have been more happy
getting married with their cousin Emma .

Wilson had even told her that he would not hear of his younger brother anymore,blaming him for the death of their old mother who had actually died within seven days after Arthur's leaving (for good).
As their late mother would have most probably done in other circumstances,Miss Brittle tried to convince Wilson THAT departure had certainly nothing to do with the shortening of Mrs Loveheart's life. One day,Wilson,fed up with all that fuss , had even dared utter to his eldest sister: -"Stop talking nonsense,you just sound like Poor Mother,you know!" Moreover,he thought his young brother had not had enough benefit of life and would have been so much happier if he had married their (girl)cousin Emma.

Quelques remarques préliminaires:

I- All the more ...(..as)

Le comparatif est précédé de l'adverbe "the"; la seconde proposition, qui exprime une cause, peut être introduite par AS - SINCE - ou - BECAUSE

«He felt the more /all the more depressed as all friends were away.

II- Within ...(..of)
peut exprimer la période à l'expiration de laquelle l'action a été ou aura été accomplie.

« He died within a month of his wife's death.»
Il est mort dans le mois qui suivit la mort de sa femme.

III-
Late :
Her late husband/the late president ... used only before a noun of a person no longer alive.

IV-
To make the most of sth : To take full advantage of something because it may not last long.
It's a lovely day - We must make the most of it.
make the most of ──► profiter de.
On peut aussi employer:
to profit from /to benefit from
« I profited enormously from working with her.»
« I feel that I have benefited greatly from her help.»

V- To think
Ce verbe admet DEUX constructions selon le sens de la phrase.
1- to think = réfléchir à, songer à
« What are you thinking of ? » ──► À quoi songez-vous ?
2- to think = croire, avoir une opinion, alors dans ce cas on peut le remplacer par "to believe" et c'est alors un verbe sans forme progressive
« I think he's wrong.» ──► Je pense/crois qu'il a tort.(c'est mon opinion)

VI- To dare

On connaît dare auxiliaire de modalité.
Dare est aussi un verbe lexical.
Il est alors suivi d'un infinitif avec ou sans to.

« I wonder how he dared to say such a thing .»
Je me demande comment il a osé dire une chose pareille.

Suivi d'une proposition infinitive il est synonyme de "to challenge"

« He dared me to dive from the pier.»
Il m'a mis au défi de plonger du haut de la jetée.

concernant l'exercice Theme(2)(anglais) que vous venez de corriger, je me pose la question suivante :

"whereas Miss Brittle understood Arthur's decision better and better"

pourquoi "understood", quand "better and better" indiquent une durée, me semble-t-il en tout cas ?

Enfin !!!.... Une question
Depuis que je répète cette sempiternelle formule :

« Je vous remercie de votre participation.
Je répondrai très volontiers à toute question concernant ce sujet.»

Quelqu'un se décide à en poser une.

Et je me dois de le remercier, car sa question est très pertinente.
J'ai bien pensé à faire une remarque sur l'emploi du verbe "to think", mais j'ai omis involontairement, et je m'en excuse, de parler du verbe "to understand".

Les anglais attachent beaucoup plus d'importance à l'aspect qu'aux temps.
They played tennis yesterday morning (aspect pontuel)
They were playing tennis when it started raining (aspect progressif)

En français on traduit ces deux verbes par un imparfait.

La question est donc de savoir si l'on peut employer n'importe quel verbe à la forme progressive.
Je répondrai sans ambages non.

Il existe des verbes qui n'admettent pas de développement dans le temps.
Ce sont des verbes sans forme progressive.

Voici un lien qui vous donnera une liste non exhaustive de verbes sans forme progressive.

le verbe "understand" en fait partie.

On écrira:
« He is getting better and better »

On ne pourra pas écrire :
« Miss Brittle was understanding better and better ......»

On écrira donc :

En fait ils sont trois : une fille et deux garçons.
La fille, Miss Brittles, est l'aînée.
Lorsque l'un des deux frère parle de sa soeur, il la considère comme étant plus âgée que lui.
Il dit c'est ma soeur aînée.(il n'en a qu'une)
D'où
My elder sister.
My eldest sister signifierait qu'il a au moins deux soeurs plus âgées que lui.

Question(2)

Dernière toute petite question : "on other occasions" ; j'ai pour ma part tendance à dire "in other occasions", erreur ?

En anglais, les verbes , les adjectifs , les noms sont accompagnés de prépositions

C'est le cas du mot "occasion"
Voici des exemples :

I seem remember that on that occasion he was with his wife.

I have a suit but I only wear it on special occasion.

Notez les expressions:
1-On occasion = sometimes but not often
« I have on occasion visited her at home.»

2- On the occasion of = at the time of an important event
« On the occasion of her 50th birthday.
