Prefer TO v-ing/help

Hello everybody,

I have a recurrent problem with : I prefer...

I prefer having dogs TO having cats or
I prefer having dogs RATHER THAN having cats

Which one of these two sentences is right?

Bonjour,

Selon moi, 2 formes seraient possibles:

- I prefer dogs to cats ( 'to' servant à comparer 2 objets/noms)

- I prefer having dogs to cats ( ou ' to having cats' mais éluder le verbe est possible)

On a tendance de manière générale à simplifier ces structures lourdes. Voici d'autres exemples et des explications ici:

C'est un peu comme la construction de different from/to/than...

different from [sth/sb] adj + prep (not like) différent de adj + prép
My father's views on politics are different from mine.
different than [sth/sb] adj + prep mainly US, colloquial (different from) différent de adj + prép
different to [sth/sb] adj + prep UK, colloquial (different from) différent de adj + prép

I prefer cats to dogs.Effectivement, courant avec des noms.
I prefer swimming to hiking.
Comme on a :
I would rather have tea than coffee.
I would rather swim than run.
On évolue assez facilement sur rather than derrière prefer.
