There,their,they're/help
Message from raphac posted on 10-08-2020 at 15:09:28 (D | E | F)
Hello !
My nephew (9 years old) is learning English and would like some help with practising "there", "their" and "they're" when speaking and writing.
Do you know of any resources or tips for children to understand the difference ?
Thanks !

Hello,
Here are tests on that subject,
in English ...Link

in French ...Link

I am sure you could help him by showing something there or here, showing a photo of kids with their books or something else, together with they're because they are very nice kids.

Hello!
Even native English speakers confuse "there, their, and they're!" I used to tell my students this:

tHERE = has the word HERE in it, so it often gives a location of something or someone (here and there)
> Where is the cat? The cat is THERE, it is not here!
> Have you seen my book? THERE is a book on the table, is it your book?

tHEIR = has the word HEIR in it, so it identifies something that belongs to a person. (an heir = héritier/e)
> That is not my cat, it is THEIR cat.
> THEIR book is on the table.

THEY'RE = the apostrophe indicates that a letter (sometimes letters) is missing. Here it is the letter A that is missing.
> THEY + (A)RE = They are in the store.
> THEY + (A)RE = They are reading a book.

A challenge: THEY'RE calling for THEIR cat over THERE on the table!

I hope I didn't confuse you too much.

Hi, thanks for all of your suggestions. I found them really useful! This week I also found a BBC Bitesize video Link
and a some display posters Link
which can be printed. I'm sure it is just a question of time and practice! Thanks again for your help, have a great week!
