Merci beaucoup d'avance.
April, 2 1996 two Scottish scientists Ian Wilmut et Keith Campbell had realised a genetic manipulation, on 5 July 1996, Dolly a domestic sheep was born, it is the first mammal cloned form an adult cell, in November 2019 China reported that their scientist had edited the genome of twin girls, theses announces raise questions : when will be the first human clone and can we make a perfect baby ? These questions are related to eugenics : Eugenics ] is a set of beliefs and practices that aim to improve the genetic quality of a human population by excluding certain genetic groups judged to be inferior, and promoting other genetic groups judged to be superior. We could ask what are the issues of eugenics development ? We will see that eugenics are a way to improve our lives but in a second part we will see that eugenics are not morally acceptable.
I - Eugenics, a way to improve our lives
In Class we've seen the story of Molly Nash, her parents and scientists have decided to make an another baby with selected genome to save the life of Molly who had a serious and rare disease, Molly has been saved by her brother Adam. With this case we can see the interest in Eugenics by this way humanity can be nearly safe of all diseases like HIV or cancer, with that people will live a longer and better life, there will be no more baby with a faulty system. Moreover we've seen a document who tells us that if eugenics is developed, perhaps parents can choose their baby : hair color, eye Color, IQ, personality ect... With that selection we could have perfect baby : beautiful face and a great intelligence so no one will be disadvantaged at their birth. Humans will be taller and smarter to make an advanced society. That vision is idealistic but the truth is much more darker.
II - Eugenics, not morally accepted
The Article 214-1 of the French penal code say that eugenics are punished by 30 years of prison and over 7 millions of € fines. With that we clearly understand that our developed society considered eugenics as a crime like terrorist. In class we saw a fiction story where babies are created in a laboratory by scientists, babies were thousands in racks like a hydroponic farm. These babies are not made by loves but by science in a rational sense because their utilities to the society are the only reason of their birth. Today a baby is a project between two peoples who love each other and want to have a children to share their love with him, even if their baby is disabled or ugly they will love him. Babies can't be mass produced, babies are not fruits. Moreover we saw that eugenics would produce perfect babies but what is the destiny of disabled babies if eugenics develops ? Today they are relatively accepted in all society but with eugenics the will be completely rejected and perhaps being killed or putted in quarantine like in nazi Germany. Today there is problem with babies productions, in class we saw a document who show that in some countries babies are a real business. Women who don't have a job or a low wages job will become surrogate, they are payed by people to carry their baby and when they giving birth, they give the baby at their mother by intention. This process can't be a business it should be destined to couples who can't have a baby and the real mother shouldn't do this as a full time work.
Conclusion : As we saw, there is some morals problems with eugenics, our society has rejected this idea but not all society have rejected it. This is a question that concerns everyone in the world but some countries like China don't see a problem in Eugenics and malicious scientists can do everything in this country without having a single problems. I think that the world should make sign a convention about that like they signed about nuclear weapons because for me it's as important as this subject.
