La phrase qui me pose problème est la suivante:
"We had changed the light bulb by the time it got dark"
J'aimerais savoir si je peux remplacer by the time par before.
Pourriez-vous me dire les différences entre ces deux mots s'il vous plaît ?

Yes, there's a big difference in meaning between "by the time" and "before"
"by the time" indicates the moment when the light bulb got dark.
"before" indicates that the light bulb hasn't got dark yet.

Before signifie avant que alors que by the time signifie d'ici à ce que.
It ne représente pas light bulb. L'expression signifie il fait noir.

Non, au moment où = quand,lorsque qui se traduisent par when.
By the time exprime un laps de temps, pas un moment précis.
