Preposition/help
Message from angrepa posted on 22-05-2018 at 01:00:08 (D | E | F)
Hello,
Exercise 118962 - sentence No. 7
Why AT Singapore? Isn´t the preposition IN used with big cities?
Please, could you explain this to me? I´d appreciate your answer.

Hello,
The preposition "in" is used with cities, towns, villages, hamlets, states, and countries. Size does not matter.
I live in New York City.
I live in a town of 5000 people.
I live in the village of Hermosa.
I live in a hamlet of only seven families.
I live in the State of New York.
I live in France.

Hello,
AT is used because it is about a plane landing at Singapore (airport). ...IN would mean the plane lands in the town instead of the airport.

Hello!
First, I will clarify that I am a native speaker of American English. So, my answer may be different from that of a British speaker. However, I, too, would have chosen "in" and not "at."
> It wasn't a direct flight and the plane stopped for five hours in/at Singapore. (in)
If the sentence had included "the Singapore airport," then I would have used "at."
In that sentence, you are stressing the fact that the plane is stopping at a particular location in Singapore.
Hope this helps!

Hello,
I noticed that: Elton lands at Luton and Gwyneth checks in at Northolt — where you land your private plane is a sign that you’ve arrived.
